Obituary for Catherine Elizabeth Brewington

Catherine Elizabeth Brewington
Catherine Elizabeth Brewington was born on November 6, 1932, in Cannon, Delaware, to the late Adolphus and Martha E. (Lee) Roach. She was the last born of fifteen children. God called Catherine home peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, in her recently new residence at Luther Towers, Wilmington, Delaware.

Catherine attended Middleford Elementary School through 8th grade, Frederick Douglass High School for 9th through 11th grades and graduated from the twelfth grade at Delaware State College, as was the practice then. She continued at the college for one year post high school.

After college, Catherine married Nelson L. Brewington, and to this union three sons were born, Nelson, Ricky and Eric.

Catherine joined Graham African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greenwood, Delaware, and was an active member for many years until she needed to stay close to home to care for her husband, Nelson. She enjoyed helping to plan the church’s annual Women’s Day celebration.

Catherine retired from Kraft Foods (formerly General Foods) after many years of dedicated service. She was one of the first hired when the company moved to Dover, working on the manufacturing line for Jell-O and other
well-known consumer food brands of the company.

Catherine enjoyed working in her flower beds around her home and in recent years mowing her lawn – on a riding lawn mower! She always said that she could do a better job than anyone you could hire from a lawn service!

Another favorite pastime for Catherine was watching her favorite television station, BET. Though she had seen most of the programs and movies several times, she always enjoyed watching them over again.

Catherine also enjoyed shopping for her favorite holiday, Christmas. She could probably fill a department store’s holiday section with her personal stock of lights, ornaments, trees, reindeer and Santas. To enjoy the holiday as long as possible, she always put up her outside decorations and her tree with wrapped gifts under it over the Thanksgiving weekend. She truly loved this time of the year.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, Nelson (Glenda), Ricky and Eric of Wilmington, DE; five grandchildren, Derek (Licelis) Brewington, Sharronda (Dairius) James, Britney Brewington, Rajai Brewington and Zai-Mir Brewington; seven great-grandchildren, Derek, Nicolas, Shaylea, Shaniya, Tylyssa, Dairien and Dairius, Jr.; one sister, Evelyn Matthews of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters-in-law, Lydia Roach of Bridgeville, DE, and Elizabeth (Betty) Days of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lovingly Submitted,
The Family
